Review: Ficks Hard Seltzer

Ficks Hard Seltzer was created by two college roommates on a mission to cut sugar from their cocktails without compromising flavor.  First the two had to earn enough money to launch their company.  Ron Alvarado worked in private equity and Mike Williamson in investment banking.  In 2016 they launched their line of all natural low calorie and low sugar cocktail mixers.  In February 2018 they released Ficks Hard Seltzer.  Ficks is made from a cold fermented sucrose alcohol base.  This base is made from fresh cold pressed orange juice that ferments for 2-3 weeks until no sugar is left.  At that time the 15% alcohol base is blended with sparkling water, real juice and natural flavors.  Ficks is sold in individual flavor packs and also a four flavor, 12 can variety pack.  The original four flavors were Lime, Cranberry, Blackberry, and Grapefruit.  They have since replaced Lime with Mango.  The Limes are sourced from Mexico, the Cranberries and Blackberries are grown in Washington and Oregon, the Grapefruits called Texas and California home, and finally after testing several different Mango varieties from several different regions they selected Mangos grown in Ecuador.  We will be giving you our thoughts on all five flavors.

Ficks Blackberry:  Is made with 4% blackberry juice.  I pours to a blue pink berry juice influenced color.  The aroma leads with fresh blackberry.  Yeast rolls follow.  The sweet blackberry is joined by sour dough building to a tart blackberry peak.  It fades with sour blackberry and finishes dry with bittersweet blackberry and white wine taste.

Grade: B

Ficks Cranberry:  Is made with 10% juice from cranberries and limes.  It pours to a cranberry red color.  The aroma leads with cranberry and lime juice.  Additional time in the glass brings out carbon seltzer and yeast rolls.  The sweet cranberry and juicy lime entry builds to a tart lime juice peak.  It fades with unsweetened cranberry and sour lime juice and finishes with bittersweet cranberry and lime leaving bittersweet cranberry, lime peel and white wine taste.

Grade: B-

Ficks Lime:  Is made with 4% Lime Juice and Lime extract.  It pours to a cloudy lime juice color.  The aroma leads with lime juice.  Wine yeast follows.  The lime juice entry is natural without being over sour or tart.  The flavor builds to a creamy and foamy lime peak.  It fades with tart lime juice and finishes semidry with foamy seltzer softened bittersweet lime peel taste.

Grade: B+

Ficks Grapefruit:  Is made with 10% Grapefruit Juice.  It pours to a cloudy white grapefruit juice color.  The aroma is fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.  The sweet grapefruit entry has real grapefruit flavor building to a juicy grapefruit peak that carries through the fade and finishes with whole lightly sour grapefruit taste.

Ficks Mango:  Is made from 6% Mango Puree and Lime Juice.  It pours to a bright and cloudy mango juice color.  The aroma is fresh sliced mango. The Bottom Line:  Ficks Blackberry and Ficks Cranberry taste more like a wine spritzer than hard seltzer.  After tasting all five Fick varieties I feel they dropped the wrong flavor as I preferred Lime to Cranberry.  Ficks Mango had the most fruit flavor and was by far the sweetest.
