Review: Flecha Azul Cristalino
Flecha Azul Cristalino is crafted from 100% blue agave grown for 8 years on 5000 hectares in the Highland region at Orendain de Jalisco, a family owned distillery operated since 1840. Abraham Ancer and Aron Marquez founded the brand, but Mark Wahlberg a principal investor is the face and primary promoter of Flecha Azul. Flecha Azul is made from hand selected agave that is slow cooked in traditional masonry ovens. Once extracted the mosto is open air fermented for 72 hours with a proprietary yeast strain, then triple distilled. The spirit rests for 18 months in ex bourbon barrels before it is triple filtered to remove the color and some of the oak notes. A small amount of chocolate is added before bottling. The aroma leads with toasted coconut, charred oak, cooked agave, and vanilla. Additional time brings out red velvet cake. The sweet agave, spice, and citrus entry is joined by vanilla and coconut building to a cocoa and cooked agave peak. It fades with dark chocolate and toasted oak and finishes with lemon, cocoa, coconut, cooked agave, and toasted oak.
