Review: Fremont Mischief Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

Fremont Mischief Vodka is crafted with 100% soft winter Cara wheat grown in Cascadia-Skagit Valley Washington and Willamette Valley Oregon.  Mike Sherlock a commercial fisherman, designer and builder of highspeed skiffs, fishing boats and houseboats founded Fremont Mischief Distillery in 2009 and opened in 2011 at the age of 54.  They currently also produce whiskey, bourbon, gin, and brandy.  Fremont Mischief Vodka starts with freshly harvested wheat that is ground to specification by artisan millers.  They then mash in ferment and double distill on a custom Arnold Holstein still and reduce to a healthy 85 proof with pure water sourced from a 30 foot deep well.  The vodka then rests between 3-9 months before bottling.  The aroma leads with celery, vanilla, lemon, and fresh baked pastry.  Additional time brings out butterscotch notes.  The sweet vanilla entry has a soft mouth feel building to a citrus and creamy marshmallow peak.  It fades with caramel, flaky pastry, and lemon, and finishes with anise, mineral, butterscotch, burnt lemon peel, and a warm peppery sting.
