Review: Gran Centenario Plata Tequila

by Jeff Ellingson

Gran Centenario Plata Tequila - CopyGran Centenario Plata Tequila is part of a line of tequila that was first launched in 1895.  The name commemorated the upcoming new century.  It is made with 100% blue agave grown for 10-12 years.  After harvesting the agave pinas are steam baked for 72 hours, fermented, and then small batch double distilled in copper pot stills.  The tequila is then rested for 28 days in virgin French limousine oak barrels.Gran Centenario Plata tequila pours to a pale golden color.  The result of the 28 days in an oak barrel.  The aroma is earthy agave, oak, and pear.  The sweet pear entry is joined by citrus and agave flavor, with butterscotch arriving at the midpoint.  A peppery fade follows bringing heat, sting, and lime zest before finishing with a long dry peppery oak taste that leaves an alcohol burn.  Gran Centenario Plata tequila starts sweet and fruity and finishes a little too hot and spicy.
