Review: Hijole Tequila Blanco

by Jeff Ellingson

Hijole Tequila was founded by Carlos Lazo Reyes and was originally produced at Hacienda de Oro.  It is now one of six tequila brands distilled at Tequilera TAP.  The others include Cazcanes, Inspiro, Tres Agaves, Tequila Pantalones, and Padrecito Premium Organic.  Carlos has done a great job promoting Hijole.  It is the official tequila of the New York Mets, Denver Broncos, San Antonio Spurs, and New Jersey Devils.  Hijole is expanding distribution but is currently only available in a limited number of states.  That makes the 900,000 bottles they will sell this year quite impressive.  Hijole Tequila Blanco is made from three ingredients, 100% Tequilana Weber agave grown for 6 years on a 450 acre plantation at the foot of the Santiago River, yeast, and water.  The trimmed agave is cooked for 24 hours in an auto clave.  The extracted juice is fermented without fibers, double distilled, and bottled additive free.  The aroma leads with herbal cooked agave, citrus and black pepper.  Additional time brings out orange, and cinnamon spice.  The sweet agave and orange entry is joined by cinnamon at the midpoint.  It fades with mineral and finishes with herbal agave, sea salt, orange peel, and black pepper.
