The Kraken Black Spiced Rum 70 Proof is the follow-up to The Kraken Black Spiced Rum that was first released in 2009, and bottled at 94 Proof. The rum base is made with Caribbean rum distilled in Trinidad and Tobago at Trinidad Distillers LTD. This is the same distillery that produces the Angostura line of rums. The Kraken is named for the fictional sea beast pictured on the bottles label. A secret blend of spices are infused with the rum base before bottling at 70 proof.The aroma is cinnamon, molasses, vanilla, and oak. The sweet cinnamon, vanilla, and molasses entry is joined by cherry, allspice, and nutmeg flavor. It fades with warm and spicy clove and cherry flavor and finishes with bitter sweet taste, a mild rum burn, and a flash of heat. Comparing the two Kraken Black Spiced Rums I find the 70 proof smooth enough to serve on the rocks. While there is a spicy finish with a mild rum burn, there is as expected, a much softer alcohol presence. The 70 proof also has cherry flavor instead of the chocolate taste I found in The Kraken 94 proof.
