Review: Long Road Vodka
Long Road Vodka is one of over a dozen spirits crafted at Long Road Distillers, the first craft distillery in Grand Rapids Michigan. The other spirits include Gin, Whiskey, Rum, Bourbon, Rye, Brandy, Liqueurs, and Aquavit. Kyle Van Strien and Jon O’Connor opened the distillery May 2015 committed to using local Michigan ingredients and true grain to glass craft distilling. Long Road Vodka is made from red winter wheat grown by a local farmer. The whole grain wheat is milled in-house, and fermented onsite. The distillate is first distilled on a 500 gallon Vendome still. A second distillation follows on an 18 plate Mueller finishing still. The vodka is non chill filtered and not treated with any carbon or charcoal filtration techniques. The aroma leads with vanilla and caramel. Additional time brings out orange wedge notes. The sweet vanilla entry is joined by caramel building to a fresh baked whole wheat bread, and toffee peak. It fades with vanilla and toffee and finishes with butterscotch, French pastry, orange zest, and toffee taste.
