Review: Maestro Dobel 50 Cristalino Extra Anejo Tequila

by Jeff Ellingson

Maestro Dobel 50 Cristalino Extra Anejo Tequila was launched in the US October 2020 to celebrate the 50th birthday of 11th generation tequila maker Juan Dobel.  Juan oversees the production of all Maestro Dobel tequilas.  Maestro Dobel and Don Julio are both credited with creating the worlds first cristalino tequilas.  Maestro Dobel 50 Cristalino is made from 100% blue weber agave grown in the Lowlands on their family estate.  The agave is cooked in an autoclave and double distilled.  The spirit is aged for a minimum three years in American and Eastern European oak barrels.  A proprietary carbon filtration removes the color before it is hand bottled.  The aroma leads with caramel, cooked agave, Juicy Fruit gum, toasted oak, and pepper.  Additional time brings out chocolate and cinnamon.  The sweet steamed herbal agave, vanilla, and orange entry builds to a tropical fruit peak with pineapple, orange, and banana.  It fades with spiced orange, and Mexican chocolate, and finishes with orange peel, oak, tobacco, and pepper.
