McKenzie’s Original Hard Cider was introduced in 2011. It is made with cider sourced from and bottled by Mayer Brothers in West Seneca New York. The company was formed by Lenny Clolek who helped build the Mike’s Hard line of malt liquor and also worked for the Woodchuck Hard Cider company. The McKenzie’s name is a tribute to his brother in law who died at 43 from brain cancer. Original is one of 5 flavors they currently offer.The aroma is a mix of musty apples with a hint of malty beer. It pours to a lightly carbonated golden color. The intial crisp flavor builds to a tart peak before fading with a semi dry finish. McKenzie’s describes their taste as reminiscent of it’s UK predecessors and I agree the finish has the flavor of the exotic bittersweet French apples used in some of those brands. While I don’t find any information on the type or source of the apples used I pick up that taste. Once I’ve swallowed the cider the flavor I’m left with in my mouth is very beer like.
