Review: Mission Brewery Hard Root Beer
Mission Brewery Hard Root Beer was introduced in 12 ounce bottles February 2015. It is brewed at 7.5% alcohol at the Mission Brewery in San Diego California. The Mission Brewery was established in 1913 and closed during Prohibition. Dan Selis an avid home brewer re-established the brand in 2007. This is my 7th hard root beer review, and I expect more to follow. Mission describes this as a malt beverage made with natural and artificial flavors with caramel and certified color added. They are expanding distribution, but the easiest place to find Mission Hard Root Beer or any of their other beers is in California. It pours to a dark brown color with a medium, by hard root beer standards, head. The aroma is vanilla custard, with sarsaparilla, wintergreen, and beer notes. The sarsaparilla and anise entry is joined by a touch of beer flavor. I would describe the overall flavor as very strong and not over sweet or creamy. At the midpoint the anise flavor is very strong. The black licorice flavor continues through the fade that includes beer and wintergreen taste. Unlike some of the other hard root beers on the market today, Mission Hard Root Beer has an alcohol presence that is very noticeable. Bottled at 7.5% I expected a little more, but maybe not this much.
