Review: North River Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

North River Vodka was founded by Chris and Amanda Iott in 2018.  It is distilled and botted through a partnership with Grand Traverse Distillery.  Grand Traverse Distillery is no stranger to crafting vodka as they produce 5 of their own.  One made from wheat.  One from Rye, and three flavored vodkas including Chipotle, Cherry, and Cocoa Bean.  North River is handcrafted from whole fresh potatoes grown on the Iott Seed Farm in Kalkaska.  They grow around 22 million pounds of potatoes each year.  This family farm has been in business since 1974, but the Iott family has been farming in Michigan since the 1800’s.  For each bottle of North Vodka that is sold 1 pound of potatoes is donated to the Michigan Food Banks.  The aroma leads with vanilla, cinnamon, and wet potato skin.  The sweet vanilla and citrus entry has a creamy and viscous mouth feel.  Baked spiced cinnamon apple arrives building to a milky seasoned unpeeled mashed potato peak.  It fades with vanilla and bubblegum and finishes with lemon, cocoa, mineral, and black pepper.
