North Shore Sol Chamomile Citrus vodka was introduced 2011. It is one of three vodka’s crafted in Lake Bluff Illinois by the husband and wife team of Derek and Sonja Kassebaum. Their other vodka’s include their unflavored North Shore and a Tahitian Vanilla flavor. They also create 3 gins, an absinthe, and an aquavit along with several limited addition spirits. Their Sol Chamomile Citrus vodka starts with their North Shore vodka as a base. North Shore is made in small batches by hand in a custom made still from Southern Germany. They use Midwestern grown wheat and corn and minimally filtered Lake Michigan water. It is then infused and distilled with hand peeled oranges, lemons, limes, Roman and German chamomile blossoms, Ceylon cinnamon, and allspice.The aroma is a citrus blend lead by orange with lemon zest and some floral undertones. In my mouth the feel is soft. The flavor enters with creamy lemon. Fresh lime joins the mix and builds to a sweet bright orange peak. There is a mild mouth warming before fading with a hint of chamomile on the smooth lightly peppered long citrus finish that is punctuated with a nice touch of cinnamon. This has the feel of something much less than the 80 proof it weighs in at, making this a vodka certainly smooth enough to drink on the rocks, and tasty enough to enhance your favorite cocktail.
