Review: Not Your Fathers Ginger Ale

by Jeff Ellingson

Not Your Fathers Ginger Ale - CopyNot Your Fathers Ginger Ale was just released in 12 Oz. six pack bottles, and cans.  This is their follow-up to their very successful Not Your Fathers Root Beer which is currently the nations best selling craft beer sku.  It was created at the Small Town Brewery in Wauconda Illinois and because of expected demand it is being bottled, canned, and distributed through an agreement with Pabst.  NYFGA is a gruit inspired beer.  Gruit is German for herbs, and is an ancient way of bittering and flavoring beer using roots, spices, flowers, and berries. It pours to a golden amber hued color and a thin white head.  The aroma is fresh cut ginger and lemon with sandalwood.  The sugar sweet lemon soda entry is joined by spicy ginger taste.  The ginger flavor builds, as the lemon flavor fades.  It finishes with spicy cinnamon and wood flavor, that leaves a sting and hard lemon candy taste.  The success of Not Your Fathers Root Beer is the result of Master Brewer and Founder Tom Kovac crafting a beer that tastes just like root beer with no beer or alcohol taste.  While there is no beer or alcohol flavor in Not Your Fathers Ginger Ale, it does not taste like the Schweppes or Canada Dry Ginger Ale most are used to.  The fresh ginger and lemon flavor give this more of a craft ginger ale taste.
