Review: Omission Hard Seltzer

Omission Hard Seltzer was launched October 2019.  It is produced at Omission Brewing Company in Portland Oregon.  The Omission brewery was founded in 2012 and they currently produce four beers, Omission Lager, Pale Ale, IPA, and Ultimate Light.  Omission is part of Craft Beer Alliance a group of breweries that was originally formed with the merger of Red Hook Ale and Widmer Brother in 2008.  In 2010 Anheuser-Busch acquired about a third of the company.  Since then CBA has added Kona Brewing Company, Cisco Brewers, Wynwood Brewing, Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Omission, and Square Mile Cider Company.  November 2019, Anheuser-Busch InBev acquired the entire company.  Omission Hard Seltzer is currently available in four flavors including Lime, Grapefruit, Orange Twist, and Pomegranate-Blueberry-Acai.  Omission Hard Seltzer is made with just four ingredients carbonated filtered water, alcohol from organic cane sugar, hops, and natural fruit flavor.  Omission Hard Seltzer Lime

It pours to a pale golden color with a fluffy white head.  This was the case with all four varieties.  The aroma is hoppy with a lime backing.  The sweet lime entry is joined by natural hop flavor building to a creamy lime and hops peak.  It fades and finishes with bitter hops and grapefruit peel taste.  Omission Hard Seltzer Lime looks, smells, and tastes more like beer than a hard seltzer.

Omission Hard Seltzer Grapefruit

The aroma is hoppy with a white grapefruit backing.  The bittersweet white grapefruit entry builds to an unsweetened grapefruit peak.  It fades with salty hop flavor, and finishes dry with grapefruit peel and piney hop taste.

Omission Hard Seltzer Orange Twist

The hoppy aroma has some malt with orange peel on the back end.  The sweet orange and salty hop entry builds to an orange peel peak.  The finish is dry and malty with grapefruit peel and tangerine taste.

Omission Hard Seltzer Pomegranate-Blueberry-Acai

The aroma is blueberry IPA.  Additional time in the glass brings out notes of pomegranate and chocolate.  The sweet blueberry and tart pomegranate entry is joined by piney hops building to a chocolate blueberry peak.  It fades with malt and pine leaving semi-dry chocolate and berry taste.  Of the four Omission flavors this is top selection.

I’m not questioning whether Omission Hard Seltzer is truly a hard seltzer, it is.  I am questioning how it will be accepted by the hard seltzer drinking public.  If a flavored hard seltzer hooked up with an IPA, Omission Hard Seltzer may be the resulting offspring.
