Review: Original Sin Elderberry Cider

by Jeff Ellingson

original sin elderberryOriginal Sin Elderberry cider was introduced May 2013.  While not a staple in most US households, products made with elderberries and elderflowers are popular in Europe where they are made into everything from syrup and marshmallows to liqueurs and soft drinks.  Original Sin began making cider in 1997 in Upstate New York and today they craft five ciders and bottle these ciders at the Florida Beer Company in Melbourne Florida.  Original SIn Elderberry Cider is made with hard cider and elderberry juice, with no artificial flavor, sugar, or color added.

It pours to a rich burgundy color with medium carbonation and a thin white head.  The aroma is a subtle mix of berry and apple.  In my mouth the effervescence of this cider has the feel of a Champaign.  The flavor enters as a sweet berry with crisp apple and builds to a tart apple berry peak before a dry bittersweet finish.  I find the overall taste of Original Sin Elderberry, is less sweet than tart, bittersweet, and dry.
