Review: Patron El Cielo Silver Tequila

by Jeff Ellingson

Patron El Cielo Silver tequila was just released.  Priced at $129 this is not even Patrons most expensive blanco tequila.  That honor belongs to Gran Patron Platinum.  Patron has been building out their product line over the past year with several new releases including Patron Ahumado a tequila made from agave pinas roasted in small batches with mesquite charcoal for 7 days in underground stone pits at Hacienda Patron.  Another recent release is Patron El Alto made primarily from extra anejo blended with anejo and reposado tequila.  The spirit is aged in 11 different types of barrels before blending and bottling.  Patron El Cielo is a straight forward unaged tequila made from 100% agave grown in the Los Altos region.  While Original Patron is twice distilled and Gran Patron Platinum three times, Patron El Cielo is distilled 4 times using the smallest copper pot still at Hacienda Patron.  The aroma leads with roasted agave, agave fiber, vanilla, toasted coconut, butterscotch, black pepper and citrus.  The cooked agave and steamed artichoke entry has a soft mouth feel.  Vanilla and lime arrive building to a creamy vanilla, fresh agave, green olive, and orange citrus peak.  It fades with tropical fruit and finishes with black pepper, vanilla, mineral, cooked agave, and burnt orange peel.  Patron El Cielo has quite a bit more flavor and pepper than I expected from a tequila distilled four times.
