Review: Pure Class Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

Pure Class Vodka is crafted at Hendricks Family Distillery.  The original name was Pur Class Vodka.  The distillery was founded in 2011.  The design and building took two years, with distillation beginning in 2013.  The idea for a family distillery started with Karl Hendricks, an ethanol plant employee and the Master Distiller of Pure Class Vodka.  He enlisted the help of his brother Zac, his dad Jim and mother Peggy.  Karl designed the plant.  Zac and Jim built the stills, tanks, and filters.  Peggy applied for the permits.  They currently also produce Eureka Moonshines, Hendricks Family Distillers Rum, and Pure Class Light, a vodka made with 1/2 the calories and 1/3 the alcohol of their original Pure Class Vodka.  Pure Class Vodka is made from dehydrated potatoes sourced from McCain Foods in Plover Wisconsin.  The spirit is distilled multiple times until they achieve 192 proof.  The spirit is carbon filtered and proofed to 80 before bottling.  The aroma leads with coffee grounds and potato skin.  Additional time brings out tangerine and chocolate milk.  The sweet vanilla and cold brew coffee entry is joined by tangerine building to a milky mashed potato, butterscotch, and mocha peak.  It fades with eggnog, and finishes with tangerine peel, whole russet potato, anise, a pinch of white pepper, and marshmallow topped hot cocoa.
