Review: Rehorst Vodka
Rehorst Vodka is crafted at Great Lakes Distillery. Great Lakes Distillery was founded by Guy Rehorst in 2004. He began distilling in 2006 becoming the first legal distillery in Wisconsin since Prohibition. They currently craft 2 vodkas, 5 gins, 10 whiskeys, 3 brandys, 5 liqueurs, rum, and absinthe. Rehorst Vodka is made from a mash of Wisconsin grown red wheat and red wheat malt. It is small batch distilled 3 times in a custom Arnold Holstein copper pot still and filtered until the taste is just right. The aroma leads with whole wheat bread and malt. Additional time brings out almond notes. The Cream of Wheat cereal and citrus entry has a chewy viscous mouth feel building to a citrus, almond pulp, and malt peak. It fades with citrus, whole natural almonds, and mineral and finishes semidry with anise, lemon peel, malt, and white pepper.
