Saugatuck Pumpkin Chai Ale is one of 13 year round, seasonal and specialty beers crafted at the Saugatuck Brewing Company. Some of those beers include their Blueberry Maple Stout, Serrano Pepper Ale, and Oval Beach Blonde. Founder and original Brew Master Barry Johnson opened his brewery in Michigan in 2005 with a 3.5 barrel brew on premise system. Today they use a 45 barrel brew system, and in 2015 they produced 13,000 barrels of beer. Pumpkin Chai is brewed with pumpkin and herbal chai tea. Chai tea originates from India and is made with black tea, heavy milk, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, clove, and pepper, and is usually served sweetened. It pours to a cloudy pumpkin mahogany color with a thick tan head. The aroma is roasted malts, cinnamon, and cardamom, with a black pepper backing. The heavy malted entry has ginger, cardamom, and pepper flavor. Cinnamon arrives at the midpoint before fading with tea and clove flavor and a semidry well hopped black pepper finish. While Pumpkin Chai Ale is brewed with pumpkin and chai tea, I taste very little tea, and no pumpkin or pumpkin spice flavor.
