Pyotr Smirnoff first opened his distillery in Moscow in 1864 and after this distillery was nationalized by the Tsar, the family escaped Russia and moved several times finally settling in the Ukraine. Today Smirnoff is produced in several locations world wide including the US, where it is made with Midwest grown grain and produced in Plainfield Illinois. The vodka is triple distilled and filtered ten times. The aroma is subtle creamy cereal, with a hint of lemon and old school vodka. Those who claim vodka is odorless may have been fans of Smirnoff. The soft grain entry is joined by creamy sweetness building to a lemon grass peak. It fades with a little warmth, a mild sting, and a gentle spiciness, while retaining both lemongrass and grain flavor. The finish is semi dry with a light charcoal filtered taste, and is smooth enough to drink on the rocks. This is a vodka that continues to perform better when judged in blind taste tests.
