Review: Sonic Hard Seltzer Tropical Variety Pack

by Jeff Ellingson

Sonic in partnership with Coop Ale Works launched two 12 can four flavor variety packs May 2021 in Oklahoma.  Since then distribution has expanded to several states.  Today we are starting with their Tropical Variety Pack.  It may be challenging matching the super sweet Sonic Slushes flavor with a 1 carb hard seltzer but if we like what we taste we will track down their Citrus Variety Pack.  Coop Ale Works opened their door in 2009 and they currently craft six year round beers including Ice Chest IPA, DNR, Saturday Siren Dry Hopped Pils, Horny Toad Blonde, F5 IPA, and Native Amber.  Sonic Hard Seltzer was inspired by the world famous Sonic Slushes sold in more than 3500 restaurants in 46 states.  Each 12 ounce slim can weighs in with 100 calories and 5% alcohol.  They are made from a sugar alcohol base with natural flavors 1 carb and 1 gram of sugar.

Sonic Orange Pineapple Hard Seltzer:  The aroma leads with fresh peeled orange.  Additional time brings out tropical pineapple notes.  The pulp free orange juice entry is joined by crushed pineapple building to a tart and tangy orange pineapple peak.  It fades with sour orange and finishes with orange peel and tangy pineapple.

Grade: B

Sonic Ocean Water Hard Seltzer:  The aroma leads with lime juice.  Additional time brings out Sprite and coconut buttercream notes.  The sweet limeade entry builds to a coconut Sprite peak.  It fades with lime juice and finishes with Diet Green River Soda, lemon juice, and creamy coconut.

Sonic Mango Guava Hard Seltzer: The aroma leads with ripe mango.  Guava follows.  The sweet mango entry builds to a tangy MOG peak of mango, orange, and guava.  It fades with guava Hawaiian ice and finishes with orange peel and dried mango taste.

Sonic Melon Medley Hard Seltzer: The aroma leads with fresh melon.  Additional time brings out floral watermelon and sliced Meyer lemon.  The sweet watermelon and orange peel entry builds to a ripe melon peak.  It fades with watermelon taffy and cantaloupe, finishing with lemon and watermelon sour patch kids taste.
