Review: State Line Vodka

by Jeff Ellingson

State Line Vodka is a grain to glass vodka crafted at State Line Distillery in Madison Wisconsin.  John Mleziva founded the distillery in 2014 and opened the doors 2017.  John received a Master Science degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh Scotland.  State line vodka is made from a blend of 87% wheat grown at Sprecher Farm in Lone Rock Wisconsin and 13% locally grown barley.  The vodka is double distilled.  State Line also produces rum, whiskey, aquavit, aperitivo, and 3 gins.  The aroma leads with lemon, blackberry, butterscotch and fresh pastry.  Additional time brings out chocolate donut.  The sweet lemon pastry and malt entry has a soft mouth feel.  Cocoa arrives building to a chocolate malt, Wheaties cereal, and tart lemon peak.  It fades with butterscotch and finishes with lemon, cocoa, and coal fired pizza crust.  If you like your vodka served chilled, tasty, and smooth, a bottle of State Line Vodka is well worth searching for on your next visit to Wisconsin.
