Review: TenHead American Vodka
TenHead American Vodka takes its name from the ten head of cattle Patrick Mullins sold in Ireland to start a new life as a Wisconsin Dairy farmer in 1849. Seven generations later the Mullins are still proud members of the states dairy industry. When Luke Mullins a fourth generation cheese maker married Heather a fermentation scientist they set in motion what has become Knowlton House Distillery. The distillery just opened in September in Mosinee Wisconsin, and they craft 3 whiskey’s from corn, rye, and barley sourced from local Wisconsin farms. Gin and vodka from milk. Actually whey. A byproduct of milk. For every pound of cheese that is made nine pounds of whey is created. Master Distiller Heather Mullins takes the whey from the Mullins family cheesemaking operation located across the street where fresh milk from 700 local Wisconsin dairy farmers is delivered everyday. Tenhead American vodka is distilled on a custom built traditional pot and column still. The 30 foot tall column still has 40 copper plates. Each plate offers an additional distillation point. The aroma leads with vanilla ice cream, peeled orange, and banana. Additional time brings out butterscotch. The sweet orange, vanilla, and milky butterscotch entry has a textured mouth feel building to a banana milkshake peak. It fades with orange, vanilla, and butterscotch and finishes with green banana, almond gelato, orange peel, mineral, and white pepper.
