Review: Truly Punch Hard Seltzer

by Jeff Ellingson

The Truly Punch Hard Seltzer variety pack will be arriving on store shelves in May.  I was lucky to get my hands on some a little early.  This is one of 6, 12 can hard seltzer variety packs currently produced by Boston Beer Company under their Truly Hard Seltzer label.  The others include Berry, Citrus, Tropical, Lemonade, and Iced Tea.  While Kona Brewing Company, Fruit Smash, Odd Side, Ashland, Two Lane, and Sun Rise have released individual punch flavored hard seltzers, only Braxton Brewing Company has created a four flavor punch variety pack, with their release of Vive Punch Hard Seltzer.  With Truly jumping in the “Punch pool”, I’m expecting that number to grow to 5 before the end of summer.  Each 12 ounce slim can of Truly Punch is made with filtered water, cane sugar alcohol, natural flavors, and Stevia sweetener.Truly Berry Punch Hard Seltzer: It pours to a pale color somewhere between pink and purple.  The aroma is sugar sweet, with raspberry and strawberry notes.  Additional time in the glass brings out juicy blueberry.  The stevia dipped strawberry entry is joined by blueberry bubble gum building to a raspberry punch peak.  It fades with tart triple berry flavor and finishes with Blue Sweetarts taste.

Grade: B+

Truly Fruit Punch Hard Seltzer:  It pours to the same pink purple color.  The aroma is a well balanced fruit punch blend of cherry orange and apple.  Additional time brings out lemonade notes.  The Cherry Swizzler entry is joined by joined by juicy orange building to an apple, orange and maraschino cherry peak.  The same three fruit flavor profile continues through the finish that leaves stevia, Orange Tang, and cherry licorice aftertaste.

Grade: B

Truly Tropical Punch Hard Seltzer:  The aroma leads with dragon fruit and pineapple.  Additional time in the glass brings out fresh cut watermelon.  The Jolly Rancher Watermelon entry is joined by tangy pineapple and dragon fruit.  It fades with pear preserve, and watermelon, and finishes with cherry, pineapple gummy bear, and Kiwi Kool-Aid taste.

Grade: B

Truly Citrus Punch Hard Seltzer:  While I was expecting this to pour to the same color as the other three varieties it pours to a lemon limeade color.  The aroma leads with Flintstone Vitamin.  Additional time brings out grapefruit and lime notes.  The stevia sprinkled grapefruit and lemon entry is joined by lime at the midpoint.  It fades with limeade and finishes with Fresca with a squeeze of lemon, lime, and a sprinkle of Stevia.

Grade: B

The Bottom Line:  Truly Punch Hard Seltzer like Truly Lemonade Hard Seltzer is quite a bit sweeter than any of the 12 Truly Hard Seltzer flavors.
