Review: Ambros Banana Whiskey

Ambros Banana Whiskey was released October 2018.  It is made from a 3 year old Irish Whiskey base and infused with only 100% real banana’s in Henderson Nevada.  To be specific no artificial flavors, “natural” flavors, fruit juice concentrate, or added sugar are added.  50,000 hand peeled bananas are needed for each batch of Ambros.  Banana’s are the most consumed fruit on the planet yet they have yet to make much of an impact in the world of adult beverages.  I have reviewed 4 banana flavored vodka’s and all four are no longer produced.  The only banana flavored vodka currently produced is Burnetts Strawberry Banana.  With dozens of flavor varieties the only banana flavored hard seltzer I’m aware of is the just released Happy Dad Banana Hard Seltzer, available as a limited release.  Banana seems to be limited to flavored rum and whiskey.  We have previously reviewed Howler Head, Skatter Brain, and Whiskey Smith banana flavored whiskey.  Ambros is the only banana spirit I’m aware of infused with real banana, so we are anxious to taste the results. Review: Skatter Brain Dark Chocolate Banana Whiskey

Skatter Brain Dark Chocolate Banana Whiskey was just released.  It joins a Skatter Brain lineup that includes Skatter Brain Peanut Butter Whiskey, PB&J, Peanut Butter Cream, and Dark Cherry Vanilla.  All five are available at Total Wine and More stores throughout the US.  The fist thing I noticed is the elephant found on the Skatter Brain Peanut Butter whiskey flavors has been replaced by a gorilla.  Skatter Brain Dark Cherry Vanilla feature a raccoon head.  All three Skatter Brain spokes animals love their shades.  Skatter Brain is made by Universal Brands in Princeton Minnesota from a Canadian whiskey base.  Natural flavors and caramel color are added before bottling at 70 proof. Review: Whiskeysmith Banana Whiskey

Whiskeysmith Banana Whiskey was launched October 2020, along with Whiskeysmith Pineapple, and Whiskeysmith Chocolate.  They join a flavored whiskey lineup that includes the previously reviewed PB&W Peanut Butter Whiskey.  The Whiskeysmith brand appears to be associated with Old Elk Distillery, but they go out of their way to separate the Old Elk Whiskey and Whiskeysmith brands.  It is unclear where Whiskeysmith is actually distilled and flavored.  One possibility is the Old Elk Distillery in Fort Collins but there are some bread crumbs that hint at a possible Minnesota connection.  Also unclear are the ingredients used to create this whiskey as none are included on their website, Facebook, or the bottles label.  Read more »

Review: Howler Head

Howler Head is produced by Wooler Brands in North Charleston South Carolina.  It is made from a Kentucky Straight Bourbon base and is infused with natural banana flavor.  Wooler Brands is betting “What is banana?” is the correct response to the future Jeopardy answer “Based on sales after Cinnamon, Apple, and Peanut Butter this is the next most popular flavored whiskey on the market today?”  Each bottle weighs in at 80 proof and is guaranteed to not contain any Ape S#t.  Their labels promise, not mine.    Read more »
