Review: Cimarron Blanco Tequila

cimarron-blanco-tequila-copyCimarron Blanco Tequila is made by Enrique Fonseca, the Master Distiller of several tequila’s including Don Fulano, Asom Broso, and Antenom 1146.  Cimarron is made with 100% estate grown Weber blue agave grown for about ten years in the Highland region at an elevation of 4600 feet.  Each hand selected agave has an average brix of 24-26.  This is twice the sugar content of the average agave.  The pina’s are slow roasted for 2-3 days and then crushed.  The juice is fermented using naturally occurring yeast and then double distilled in a copper alembic still.  Cimarron Blanco is a tequila that has scored well with other reviewers.  It is priced as a budget tequila.  I picked up my bottle for 18.99, and as a bonus it is sold in 1 liter bottles. Review: Tierra Azteca Blanco Tequila

tierra-azteca-blanco-tequila-copyTierra Azteca Blanco Tequila is produced in San Francisco Tesistan, Jalisco at Destileria Santa Lucia.  This is the same distillery that creates the Amate, El Capo, and Grand Mayan brands of tequila.  All right this is a tequila I purchased for $21 because I liked the bottle and price.  I would have purchased it sooner but I tend to avoid tequilas that provide no details of their production on their website.  This is a 100% agave tequila.  No details on the agaves origin, Highland or Lowland are provided.   Read more »

Review: Thunderstruck Silver Tequila

thunder-struck-silver-tequila-copyThunderstruck Silver Tequila was recently released.  The brand is owned by the HOF rock band AC/DC, who already own a line of beer and wine.  Thunderstruck is named for the lead single from AC/DC’s 1990, Razor’s Edge Album.  The song has been used as walk up music for baseball closers John Smoltz and Mark Melancon, boxer Manny Pacquiao, and player introductions for the LA Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning.  AC/DC and Van Halen may be the only two rock bands that enjoyed equal success with two different lead singers.  Now both bands also have a tequila associated with the them.  Van Halen lead singer Sammy Hagar launched and later sold Cabo Wabo Tequila.  Thunderstruck is crafted with lowland grown agave at Fabrica de Tequilas Finos.  This is the same distillery that produces the KAH, Don Manos, and Kirkland Signature line of tequila. Review: Frida Kahlo Blanco Tequila

Frida Kahlo Blanco Tequila - CopyFrida Kahlo Blanco Tequila was launched in 2005.  It is named for Frida Kahlo a Mexican surrealist artist known as the original Mexican party girl.  She was openly bisexual and reportedly had affairs with American jazz singer Josephine Baker, and Russian communist Leon Trotsky.  How many people can make that claim?  The tequila is made from 100% agave hand selected and then slow cooked in an adobe brick oven for no less then 28 hours.  The agave is then steamed and cooled to remove any bitterness before being pressed to remove the juice.  The juice is then naturally fermented for four days before being double distilled in small batches in an antique copper still. Review: Espolon Blanco Tequila

Espolon Blanco Tequila Image - CopyEspolan Blanco Tequila was reintroduced May 2010 after a three year absence.  It was originally launched in 2000.  In 2008 Campari bought the Espolon brand along with the San Nicolas Distillery where it is made.  This came 1 year after Campari acquired 80% of Cabo Wabo Tequila which is also made at the San Nicolas Distillery.  Espolan is crafted by Master Distiller Cirico Oropeza with 100% agave that is slow roasted for 18-20 hours.  The agave is fermented and then distilled for up to 5 1/2 hours while rock music plays to inspire the agave.  The tequila is rested for several months in a stainless steel tank before it is filtered and then bottled at 80 proof.  Espolon is named for the spur of the proud rooster, and the bottles label features a skeleton riding a rooster into battle.  Read more »

Review: Aeroplano Blanco Tequila

Aeroplano Blanco Tequila Image - CopyAeroplano Blanco Tequila is made with 100% blue agave, estate grown for 8 to 10 years.  Once extracted the agave is slow cooked in masonry ovens up to 48 hours.  After the agave have cooled they are chopped and pressed to separate the juice from the fiber.  The juice is fermented with 100% natural yeast for 24 to 72 hours.  The tequila is double distilled in copper stills and then double filtered.  As the story goes Aeroplano Tequila was named for pilot Anton Branif who was forced to land his plane near an agave field in a storm.  It took days to fix his plane and while there he had the opportunity to taste the tequila the local hacienda was producing.  He was so impressed he began regular flights to pick up cases of the tequila to sell to different parts of the US.
