Review: Corgi Saddlecoat Vodka
Corgi Saddlecoat Vodka is crafted at Corgi Spirits in Jersey City New Jersey. Jersey City is recognized as the most diverse midsize city in the United States. Corgi Spirits was founded in 2017 by Bob Hagemann who owns the distillery with his parents Bob and Nancy Hagemann. They currently craft 7 gins including their award winning Earl Grey Gin, Whiskey, and Corgi Saddlecoat Vodka. Corgi Vodka is small batch distilled from potatoes in a Vendome Copper & Brass Works still. The potato distilled spirit serves as the base for all 7 of their gins. The Corgi name is inspired by the owners fascination with all things British and the love of the family pet. A portion of profits is donated to local animal rescue groups, and Hudson Pride Center. Review: LIV Vodka
LIV Vodka is crafted in Baiting Hollow New York in a beautifully restored twin cupola barn by Founder and Master Distiller Rich Stabile. Prior to WWII Long Island had over 200,000 acres of potatoes. Today the distillery is surrounded by 5000 acres of potato farms. Long Island Spirits was founded January 5, 2007 and was the first craft distillery on Long Island since the 1800’s. They were the 100th distillery in the US when they were founded. There are now over 2000, with 145 in New York state alone. LIV Vodka was their first spirit. It is made from 100% locally grown Long Island potatoes. It takes 20 pounds of potatoes to make one bottle of LIV Vodka. The distillery practices sustainable production methods including composting it’s by-products, and smart hydro thermal reclamation. LIV Vodka is small batch triple distilled on 650 liter custom made copper pot stills equipped with 30 foot tall rectification distillation columns. The vodka is non chill filtered. Read more
Review: 2Docks Vodka
2Docks Vodka is crafted at Proof Artisan Distillers in Downtown Fargo North Dakota. 2Docks was the first spirit brothers Jay and Joel Kath released when they opened the distillery in 2015. Their current lineup includes a coffee liqueur, cinnamon whiskey, gin, Old Tom gin, Cream Liqueur, Glen Fargo American Malt Whiskey, Harvest Blend Bourbon, and Crooked Furrow Bourbon. The distillery was built in a historic building previously occupied by Fargo’s Municipal Court. A 25 foot copper still named The Judge, is located near the original judges chamber. 2Docks is made from Red River Valley potatoes. After fermenting a five pass distillation follows. The finished product is pure and natural without the use of activated carbon, chill filtering, or added sugar. Read more
Review: Silver Moon Vodka
Silver Moon Vodka was introduced May 2016. It was the first spirit produced at Kerr Creek Distillery in Walton New York. They have since added an Apple Flavored Vodka, Easy Speaker Bourbon, and Ishka Triple Malt Whiskey. Kerr Creek Distillery is a New York State Farm Distillery owned and operated by Matthew and Jessica White and her parents Bob and Loretta Beckman. Silver Moon Vodka is made from a proprietary blend of locally grown potatoes, cane sugar, and fresh mountain spring water. It took several years to find the right blend of potatoes used to craft this vodka. One of the potatoes included is Katahdin, an heirloom variety developed on Presque Isle Maine in 1932. Cane sugar makes the potatoes easier to work with and avoids the need for chemical clearing agents. Read more
Review: Simple Vodka
Simple Vodka was launched March 2017 by Danny Lafuente and Dan Maslow with the promise to provide 20 meals to those in need, for every bottle sold. 1 in 8 Americans don’t always know where their next meal will come from. Simple Vodka goes from ground to glass in 6 days. It is made from locally sourced russet potatoes, and fresh water sourced from a 180 foot well that taps directly into the Snake River Aquifer. The spirit is four column fractionally distilled at a wind powered distillery. Simple Vodka has been on our radar since it was awarded it’s first of two Double Gold Medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2017. Read more
Review: Party Animal Vodka
Party Animal Vodka was launched February 2018. Kate Cullen the brand founder and CEO first came up with the concept of creating a vodka that stood for a cause while she was a college student at Chapman University in Orange California. A portion of every bottle purchased will be donated to various wild and domestic animal foundations. Party Animal is made from Idaho Russet Potatoes and pristine water originating in the Teton Mountains. It is distilled and bottled by Distilled Resources in Rigby Idaho. This wind and solar powered distillery also produces the previously reviewed Square One, Blue Ice, American Harvest, 44 North, and Zodiac vodka’s. Read more
Review: Zodiac Vodka
Zodiac Vodka was relaunched in 2014 with distribution initially limited to Texas. Zodiac has since increased availability with an eye on National distribution. Zodiac Vodka was originally introduced in 1999 so if the name sounds familiar you may have tried it years ago. Zodiac is produced in Rigby Idaho in a true farm to bottle process by Distilled Resources. This is the same distillery that produces Square One, Blue Ice, American Harvest, and 44 North Vodka. Zodiac is made with certified Russet potatoes and pure water sourced from the Snake River aquifer. After fermenting the potatoes, a 91 stage distillation in a four column still follows. The vodka is filtered once through Canadian birch charcoal. Read more
Review: Portland Potato Vodka
Portland Potato Vodka is one of several spirits crafted at the Eastside Distilling Company located in Southeast Portland’s Distillery Row since 2008. Currently eight independent distillers make their home there. Eastside also produces several rums, bourbons, whiskeys, and liqueurs. Portland Hot Potato Vodka, a habanero infused vodka made in collaboration with Secret Aardvark Hot Sauce was just released. Portland Potato Vodka is made from potatoes and pristine water from Mt. Hood. The vodka is distilled four times by Master Distiller Mel Heim. Read more
Review: Vesica Vodka
Vesica Vodka was launched in 2010. It is made from premium grade potatoes grown in Poland. The vodka is triple column distilled and triple filtered through activated carbon at the Polmos Poznan Distillery. Artesian well water is blended for balance and to reduce to proof. A state of the art ceramic candle process follows to give clarity to the vodka. Vesica is named for a vesica piscis. The vesica piscis is a geometric image formed when two circles of equal radius intersect in such a way that the center of each circle lies on the circumference of each other. This is the case when a 750ml bottle of Vesica is placed next to a 1 liter bottle. While I still see Vesica Vodka at several liquor stores I frequent, the Vesica vodka website is no longer available, and their Facebook page has not been updated in some time. Review: Born and Bred Vodka
Born and Bred Vodka was released in 2016 and is now approaching near national distribution. It originated on a quest by Channing Tatum to find the best vodka in the USA. After taste testing vodka from 25 different American distilleries, he selected the family owned and operated Grand Teton Distillery in Driggs Idaho to help craft his vodka. Born and Bred is made from Idaho potatoes grown within 25 miles of the distillery, and pure glacial waters of the Grand Teton Mountains. The vodka is small batch distilled 20 times. The Jackalope pictured on the bottles label is a mythical animal, part rabbit and part antelope. If you see one of these animals, it may be an indication you drank too much of this vodka. Read more
