Review: Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Teeling Single Malt Irish Whiskey is made from 100% malted barley from a range of differently aged barrels including a malt whiskey distilled in 1991.  The whiskey is sourced from the old Cooley Distillery founded by John Teeling in 1987.  Beam acquired the distillery December 2011.  The Teeling Distillery was founded in 2015 by John’s sons, Jack and Stephen Teeling.  After aging in ex-bourbon barrels, the whiskey is finished in 5 different wine casks including barrels used to mature Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy, and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Teeling Single Malt is non chill filtered and bottled at 92 proof.  Today is the first day of March, 16 days away from St. Patrick’s Day.  It’s a good bet this will not be our last Irish Whiskey review between now and then. Review: The Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey

The Tyrconnell Irish Whiskey is named for the horse who won the National Produce Stakes Horse Race in 1876.  Local Distiller A.A. Watts witnessed the race and created a limited edition small batch whiskey to honor the winning horse.  Watt intended to make The Tyrconnell just once, but it soon became his most popular whiskey.  Before Prohibition The Tyrconnell was claimed to be the best selling Irish Whiskey.  Because of Prohibition, The Watts Distillery closed in 1925.  Today the brand is maintained by the Kilbeggan Distilling Company.  It is double distilled from malted barley in a pot still at the Cooley Distillery.  No age statement is given on the bottle or their website. Review: Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey

Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey is made with pure Irish spring water and malted barley.  It is triple distilled from a single barley malt in copper pot stills and aged for a minimum of 12 years in bourbon oak casks.  The brand is named after the Knappogue Castle that was originally built in 1467.  Knappogue translates to, Hill of the kiss.  In 1966 Mark Edwin Andrews purchased the castle which at the time was in ruins.  He and his wife, a prominent architect embarked on an ambitious task of restoring the structure to it’s original state of glory and grandeur.  At that time Mark also began buying casks of fine pot still whiskey from top distilleries in Ireland.  The casks were further aged and bottled under the Knappogue Castle label.  In 2003 Castle Brands acquired the brand and in 2010 they launched Knappogue Castle 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey. Review: The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey

The Sexton Single Malt Irish Whiskey is crafted at the Bushmills Distillery in Ireland.  This is the worlds oldest whiskey distillery.  It is made from 100% Irish malted barley and is triple distilled in copper pot stills.  The spirit is aged for 4 years in a variety of first, second, and third use Oloroso Sherry casks.  The whiskeys are then blended by Master Blender Alex Thomas, one of Irelands few female blenders, and filled in the six sided squat black bottled pictured here.  The Sexton is imported by Proximo Spirits, the company behind over a dozen brands including Jose Cuevo, 1800, Bushmills, Three Olives, The Kraken Rum, Hangar 1, and Boodles Gin.
