Review: Oola Vodka

Oola Vodka is crafted at Oola Distillery.  Oola is named after the German Shepard dog of Founder and Head Distiller Kirby Kallas-Lewis.  Kirby founded Oola in the Capital Hill area of Seattle January 2010.  The distillery also produces Gin and Whiskey.  Prior to distilling spirits, Kirby worked on an Alaskan fishing boat, raised milk goats, created paintings, and sculptures while living in Tahiti, and ran an art gallery in New York City.  Oola Vodka is made from locally grown wheat.  It is small batch distilled on a fractional still built by Vendome Copper & Brass, and charcoal filtered once, prior to bottling at 84 proof. Review: Copperworks Vodka

Copperworks Vodka is crafted at Copperworks Distilling Company in Seattle Washington.  Co-Founder Jason Parker started brewing beer for Pike Place Brewery in 1989.  He also brewed beer at Redhook, and later became the Brew Master at Pyramid Breweries.  In 2013 he partnered with Micah Nutt to open Copperworks.  Micah is the Co-founder and the Distiller.  They currently also craft whiskey and gin.  Copperworks Vodka is made with malted barley, locally grown in Washington.  80% of the malted barley is sourced from small local independent growers.  The spirit is fermented with a pure strain of brewers yeast and fermented in a hand hammered 25 plate copper column still built in Scotland, then bottled unfiltered.  Vodka distilled from malted barley is significantly more expensive than corn, wheat, or potatoes.  The $38 a bottle price reflects this cost.  Is Copperworks worth the premium price?  Read on. Review: Vido Vodka

Vido Vodka was launched June 2020.  It is crafted in Benton City Washington from wine grapes, grown on the 2200 acre Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard and Winery.  The vodka was named to honor the family patriarch Arvid Vido Monson who ended each day with a vodka cocktail and a dream to craft his own vodka.  Once pressed the grapes are ferment until the wine is considered dry, about 12-15% alcohol.  It is small batch distilled on a dual column 24 plate still.  Before the final filtration the vodka rests for five days.  It is then blended with pure water before being freeze filtered 50 times and then hand bottled and labeled. Review: Nightside Vodka

October 4 is National Vodka day so we thought it was reason enough to review Nightside Vodka.  Nightside is distilled from Washington apples and cane sugar in Edgewood Washington, about 25 miles south of Seattle at the Nightside Distillery.  Edgewood Washington was selected because their pure untreated water comes straight from the aquifer.  With only 496 square feet of space, this is America’s smallest distillery, but that doesn’t stop them from distilling several flavored vodka’s, gin, bourbon, rye, aquavit, and a barrel aged vodka.  Founder Tom Greene spent years working the graveyard shift as a longshoremen on the docks of Seattle Washington.  This shift was referred to as the nightside, and it was the inspiration for the brands name.  Tom feels nightside workers are a different breed.  They get things done with pride, fun, and camaraderie.  Tom founded the distillery in 2013 and it grew faster than anticipated so he took on seven owner operators to share responsibilities.  The majority of the owner operators of the distillery have a service or military background including Police, Military, Fire, EMS, and 911. Review: The Walter Collective Vodka

The Walter Collective Vodka was introduced the summer of 2016 joining their previously released gin.  It is made from spelt, an ancient wheat grain, and triticale, a wheat-rye hybrid developed in Scotland in the late 1800’s.  Matt Melaik, founder of The Walter Collective was inspired by his grandfather Walter J Bade to pursue the art and craft of creating spirits.  Walter was a former World War II veteran who worked for the Chicago Water Department by day, and at night enjoyed drinking martini’s, listening to music, and painting.  It is Walters image that adorns each bottle.  Matt Melaik does not have his own distillery, instead he relies on a collective effort to create the finest spirits.  The Walter Collective Vodka is crafted by Master Distiller Ryan Hembree at Skip Rock Distillers in Snohomish Washington.  The spirit is twice distilled in small batches in a Kothe still, and minimally filtered to retain the flavor of the grain.  The vodka is hand bottled on site. Review: Bainbridge Legacy Organic Vodka

Bainbridge Legacy Organic Vodka is named for the Washington State Island the vodka is crafted on.  Bainbridge Organic Distillers was Washington States first distillery producing USDA certified organic spirits when it was founded as a family business by Keith Barnes and his son Patrick in 2009.  Since the beginning, every task in the making of distilled spirits has been done onsite with their own hands.  From the selection of grain varieties and lots, to grinding, mashing, fermenting, and distilling.  They also produce 2 gins, 2 whiskeys and an Organic Vanilla Vodka.  Bainbridge Legacy Organic Vodka is made from soft organic white wheat grown on family farms, and pristine water from the islands deep aquifers.  It is small batch distilled four times in a 300 gallon Vendome copper pot still.
